Import and Export Templates

If you're moving to Propper Sign from DocuSign, you can import your existing DocuSign templates directly, no need to rebuild them from scratch. You can also export Propper Sign templates to back them up or move them to another account.

Importing from DocuSign

Step 1: Export from DocuSign

  1. Log into your DocuSign account.
  2. Go to Templates.
  3. Open the template you want to move.
  4. Click More > Download > JSON format and save the file.

Step 2: Import into Propper Sign

  1. Go to Sign > Templates.

  3. Select or drag in the JSON file.

Step 3: Review and Test

  1. Open the imported template and check that the tag placements look right on every page.
  2. Confirm the signing order matches what you had in DocuSign.
  3. Send a test agreement to yourself in every role before using the template with real recipients.
tip

Minor tag position shifts are normal after importing, especially for complex layouts. Use the template editor to adjust anything that's off.

What Carries Over

Most common template elements import cleanly. Here's what to expect:

Fully supported:

  • Signers and "Receives a Copy" recipients
  • Signature, text, date, checkbox, dropdown, and radio button fields
  • Signing order (sequential and parallel)
  • Required/optional field settings
  • Multi-page documents

Converted on import, these elements import but may need a quick review:

DocuSign featureHow it importsWhat to do
In-Person SignerImports as SignerReconfigure the role type if needed
Certified DeliveryImports as Receives a CopyNo action needed in most cases
Other advanced recipient typesImports as Receives a CopyReconfigure as needed
Initials fieldImports as SignatureSwitch to the Initials tag type manually
SSN / Email / ZIP fieldsImport as plain textRe-add validation rules manually

Not fully imported:

  • Conditional field logic: imports and evaluates correctly during signing — recreate conditions manually in the editor once UI authoring is released
  • Formula fields: imported as plain text; formula expressions are preserved in storage but are not evaluated
  • Attachment fields: not imported (planned for a future release)
  • Authentication settings (reconfigure these in the template editor)
  • Witnesses, Notaries, Agents, Editors, Intermediaries

Post-Import Checklist

Work through these before using an imported template in production:

  1. Check tag positions on every page, adjust anything that shifted
  2. Confirm signing order is correct
  3. Set up authentication for each recipient (not carried over from DocuSign)
  4. Send a test agreement to yourself in every role
  5. Save the template

Moving from DocuSign? Start Here

If you're migrating a full library of templates, a phased approach reduces risk:

  1. List your templates and rank by how often each is used.
  2. Start with your top 3–5, import, test, and get comfortable with those first.
  3. Import the rest in batches, testing each group.
  4. Run both platforms in parallel briefly so you can catch any gaps before you stop using DocuSign.

Exporting Propper Sign Templates

To back up a template or move it to another Propper account:

  1. Go to Sign > Templates.
  2. Find the template and open its menu.
  3. Select Export and download the JSON file.

The export includes the document, all tags and their settings, recipient roles, and routing order.

Troubleshooting

Import fails, Make sure the file is a JSON export, not a PDF. If in doubt, re-export from DocuSign.

Tags are misaligned, Open the template editor and drag them back into position. This is common for complex multi-column layouts.

Features missing after import, Check the compatibility summary above. Unsupported features need to be recreated manually.

Template won't send, Make sure every Signer role has at least one required tag assigned to it.
