Recipients

Recipients are the people who participate in an agreement. Each recipient requires a full name and email address. You also assign each recipient a role that determines what they can do — whether they need to sign, approve, receive a copy, or perform another action.

Recipient roles

Every recipient you add to an agreement has a role. The role controls what action Propper Sign expects from that person, whether they can have tags assigned to them, and how they are notified.

RoleDescriptionCan sign?
SignerMust sign and complete all tags assigned to themYes
Carbon CopyReceives a copy of the completed agreement; no action requiredNo
Certified DeliveryMust open and view the agreement; viewing is tracked and confirmedNo

note

Carbon Copy and Certified Delivery recipients cannot have tags assigned to them. Tags are only available for roles that require action on the document (Signer, In-Person Signer, Agent, and Notary).

How to add a recipient

  1. Open the agreement in the editor and go to the Recipients step.
  2. Click Add Recipient.
  3. Enter the recipient's Full Name.
  4. Enter the recipient's Email Address.
  5. Select a Role from the dropdown.
  6. Repeat for each person who needs to participate in the agreement.

You can reorder recipients after adding them. The order you set determines signing sequence when sequential signing is enabled.

Signing order

By default, Propper Sign sends the agreement to all recipients at the same time (parallel). You can switch to sequential signing, where recipients receive the agreement one at a time in the order you specify.

Sequential signing is useful when an approver must review the document before it goes out to signers, or when a witness must observe after the primary signer has signed.

Identity verification

For agreements that require stronger assurance of a recipient's identity, you can configure authentication on each recipient. Options include email one-time codes, SMS one-time codes, access codes, TOTP authenticator apps, and third-party identity providers.

Authentication is configured per recipient, so you can apply different verification levels to different people in the same agreement.

Notes

  • A recipient's position in the signing order matters when sequential signing is enabled — recipients earlier in the order must complete their action before the next recipient is notified.
  • Carbon Copy and Certified Delivery recipients do not block agreement completion; they receive notifications independently of the signing sequence.
  • At least one Signer, In-Person Signer, Agent, or Notary is required to send an agreement.
